I think you ought to have your colleague look at a couple of references I did a
couple of years ago,

for a thorough review of the research done in this area as well as look at the
Journal of Developmental Education, the Journal of College Reading and
Learning, Frank Crist's LINDEX, NRC yearbooks prior to 1965, etc. etc. etc.
It is difficult to defend ourselves to naive colleagues.
