JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Position:
Education Counselor - Full-time position, Higher Education Center of St.
Louis (St. Louis, Missouri). This is an immediate fill position (Mid
January, 1997). Current funding is through June, 1998. Refunded program
runs for 4-year cycle.
Position Description:
HEC Talent Search Program assist participants (6th - 12th GRADERS)to
continue and graduate from secondary school and to enroll in
postsecondary educational programs -- encourage and assist secondary and
postsecondary dropouts to reenter and complete secondary/postsecondary
requirements. Annually recruitment: Eight hundred and fifty
participants (150 - 6th-8th graders, 100 dropouts, and 600 - 9th - 12th
graders. ETS target area is the City of St. Louis . . . of which 9 high
schools, 3 middle schools, and 1 elementary school have been identified
as direct contact schools. ETS Services include administering
assessment tools, academic planning, career planning and counseling,
financial aid orientation to include computer aided grant
applications, computer aided scholarship search, computer aided career
decision making, and outreach with community agencies.
Education Counelor duties: Proficient in the above Service Areas so as
to:
Assess, advise, and counsel ETS students, located in target schools,
pertaining to their academic/educational needs to complete high school
and be prepared to enroll in a postsecondary program. Encourage,
motivate, and assist secondary/postsecondary dropouts to reenter and
complete their respective program. Conduct workshop, field trips, and
community presentations. Identify and select (based on interviews,
assessments, overall GPA, federal guidelines of low-income/first
genrations, faculty and staff referrals) students in target schools and
target communities, who have the academic potentials to graduate
secondary and enter postsecondary, for program services.
Assist the Project Director in the preparation of monthly,
quarterly, and annual reports, utilizing the ETS Student Database
Program, on project services provided, follow-ups conducted, and
students' end results. Anually, evaluate program services and policy &
procedures for successful opperation of the program.
Qualifications & Experience:
Masters degree in education, counseling, psychology, social work
education, or related field or discipline. Or, with one degree in
one of the above concentration, and a minimum of three years of
professional experience in working with minority, low income and other
disadvantaged students. Experience and/or training in student
assessment, career development, academic advisement and guidance and
educational planning. Preference will be given to candidates whose
experience and/or background is similar to those of Talent Search
eligible populations served.
Abilities: (Secondary only to required educational requirements).
Ability to work effectively with students, parents, community and school
personnel. Good written and oral communication skills. Ability to work
flexible hours including some evenings and weekends (very seldom).
Salary: Entry Level: $24,000. Benefits include health, dental, vision
and life insurance, vacation, sick leave and holiday pay.
