SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION TRAINING INFORMATION
When Retention Is Important Enough To Act
SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION TRAINING
SEPTEMBER 24, 25, 26, 1997
North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a successful, cost effective, retention program that focuses
on high attrition courses, not high risk students. SI helps students acquire and refine the tools
essential for learning course content. A high attrition course is one in which 30% or more of
enrollees typically earn grades of D, F, and W. Students who attend SI sessions regularly
commonly average 1 letter grade higher on final course grades than comparable
non-participants and earn higher GPA's than comparable non-attendees. SI is certified by the
DOE as a program proven to increase retention.
Who Should 1. Anyone interested in beginning an SI program.
Attend? 2. Anyone who wants to know more about a cost effective retention
program.
3. Anyone interested in a refresher on running SI programs.
Each trainee receives a certificate of training and will be qualified to begin and run an SI
Program.
