REGIONAL SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION TRAINING

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a successful, cost effective, retention program that focuses on high attrition courses, not high-risk students. A high attrition course is one where 30% or more of enrollees typically earn grades of D, F, or withdraw. SI helps students acquire and refine the specific study skills indispensable to learning the subject matter in high-attrition courses. Students who participate in SI commonly average 1 let-ter grade higher on final grades, they have more grades of ABC and fewer grades of DFW. About 10% more of SI participants persist until graduation over comparable non-SI participants. The U. S. Department of Edu-cation recognizes SI as a successful retention program.

ABOUT THE TRAINER - Dennis H. Congos is a Certified SI Trainer, an SI Consultant, an SI Supervisor, and a Learning Skills Specialist. He began as an SI Coordinator in 1985. Mr. Congos has trained over 100 SI Su-pervisors from 34 postsecondary institutions in the U.S. and in England. He has researched and published on Supplemental Instruction and retention programs in five educational journals.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND - 1. Those wanting to start an SI program.
2. Those interested in a successful, cost effective, retention program.
3. Those who would like a refresher on establishing or running SI programs.
LOCATION, DATES, TIMES - North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, Talley Student Center, Room 4114. Wednesday, July 12, 9am to 5pm, Thursday, July 13, 9am to 5pm, Friday, July 14, 9am to noon. Fri-day afternoon is open for individual consultations with the trainer.
TRAINING MATERIALS - All manuals and training materials are furnished.
REGISTRATION FEE - $475. Includes 2½ days of training, training manuals and materials, refreshments, and individual consultations with the trainer.
LODGING AND DIRECTIONS - We recommend the Brownestone Hotel (800-331-7919) within easy walking distance of the NCSU campus. They have special rates of $69 (sngl) or $79 (dbl) + 12% tax.
