Reading Panel Report
     -------------------- On April 13, the National Reading Panel
     released its report on scientific research-based reading
     instruction & its readiness for application in the classroom.
     The report outlines the most effective approaches to teaching
     children to read, the status of the research on reading, &
     reading instruction practices that are ready to be used by
     teachers in classrooms across the country.

     Secretary Riley welcomed the addition of this report "to the
     growing body of knowledge about the teaching of reading."  He
     noted that the "report supplements the solid foundation presented
     by the National Research Council's report 'Preventing Reading
     Difficulties in Young Children,' by reinforcing the call for a
     balanced approach to reading instruction.  This is further
     evidence that the reading wars are over."
