I also have tutored students in lit. I ask them about the assignment, their notes, any class discussions or questions about the piece, their own impressions or questions. It is good old questioning techniques (of course, you have to be careful not to ask questions that get the answers you personally want to hear). We have also had student tutors work with literature in composition and lit classes, very successfully.
