POSITION NOTICE: ACADEMIC SKILLS SPECIALIST (ENGLISH)             

LATIN AMERICAN RECRUITMENT AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES
UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO


The Reading and Writing Specialist must have specific training, at the MA level or above and a background in English, communications, or creative writing or other related areas.  It is desirable that the candidate have an expertise in the following areas: 1) college prep education, program design, particularly in the area of learning skills development, 2) knowledge of skills that facilitate learning and the ability to apply this knowledge to study skills development, and 3) counseling skills, the ability to interview and advise students in a way that will promote effective study habits and attitudes.  The Reading Specialist will teach basic skills courses, facilitate workshops, and counsel students on an individual basis. They will work with advising and administrative staff on other student support initiatives.  
Minimum Education and Work Experience:
Masters required in English or related fields.  One year of teaching experience at the college level preferred.  Knowledge of Latino literature preferred.  Experience in working with urban students, particularly Latinos.  The ability to design and implement a curriculum focused on subject content and college survival skills.  Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.
