Counselor in Student Support Services
Responsibilities: The mission of Student Support Services (SSS) is
to provide academic and personal support to students who come from
low-income backgrounds, are first generation college students (neither
parent has a bachelor s degree), or have a documented physical or
learning disability. The professional staff members of SSS,
together with student tutors and peer advisors, enable eligible students
to meet with academic success that is commensurate with their academic
potentials and the efforts they invest in academic endeavors.
The basic responsibilities of the Counselor include providing academic
and personal support for eligible students, assisting the Director of
Student Support Services in meeting the project goals, using various
assessment tools to determine the academic and personal needs of students
in the project, assuming leadership in the area of career development,
and maintaining accurate records for meeting grant requirements.
Qualifications required: A Master s degree with a concentration in
Counseling, Communication Disorders, Developmental Education, Psychology
or related field, four years of experience in needs assessment, provision
of need-based academic services, counseling or teaching at the high
school and/or college level; certification, or eligible for
certification, as a counselor in the State of Michigan; coursework in
administering, scoring and interpreting selected achievement and aptitude
tests; training in assessing the reading, writing, mathematics,
study skills and other academic needs of students; ability to work well
with the target population; strong interpersonal, analytical and
organizational skills; and a working knowledge of personal
computers.
This is a grant funded, full-time, ten-month position with a salary range
of $23,259-$26,634
