I know this listserv is dedicated to learning assistance rather than
assessment, but at this institution, the two departments are rather closely
tied. I was hoping someone out there could give me some input. We have
begun using AI scoring of writing samples on the Accuplacer test. Early
reports indicate that the program is buggy and the scores seem rather high
compared to hand-scored writing samples.

This is problematic for us since a large number of students who place below
the college-level end up in a remediation program offered through our
learning assistance center. If they are truly underprepared and placing
into a college-level course, they will in all likelihood not be successful.
Retention is everything here, as I'm sure it is in most community colleges.

Anyone have experience with the new version of the Accuplacer, especially of
the artificial-intelligence scoring component?
