REGIONAL SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION TRAINING
November 5, 6, 7, 2001
Cape Fear Community College, Wilmington, NC

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a successful, cost effective,
retention program that focuses on high-attrition courses, not high-risk
students. A high-attrition course is one where 30% or more of enrollees
typically earn grades of D, F, or withdraw. SI helps students acquire
and refine the specific study skills indispensable to learning the
subject matter in high-attrition courses. Students who participate in
SI commonly average 1 letter grade higher on final grades, they have
more grades of ABC and fewer grades of DFW. About 10% more of SI
participants persist until graduation over comparable non-SI
participants. The U. S. Department of Education recognizes SI as a
successful retention program.
