Jon,

Our company produce a records management package for removable media
called TapeTrack.
TapeTrack is available for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris.
It is not open source, but it uses an open (fully documented) protocol,
that includes a fully featured Open API.

BTW: Keep in mind that open source does not necessarily imply free, or
even the ability to modify and re-distribute.
There are several open source licences available, and they all offer
different spins on the concept of "open source".

If your interest in Open Source is the ability to modify a system to
meed your individual needs, perhaps you could also look
at a closed source option, with:

(1) The ability to code exits
(2) An open standard API

This would achieve the same end.
