I received a message last night from visiting birders who had been
in Flamingo for the last couple of days saying that they had seen a
Lark Sparrow at about 9:30 on the morning of 10/25 along the
south side of the main road just west of the Flamingo Lodge. Their
description was convincing and I spent this morning trying without
success to find the sparrow where they saw it and at similar areas
around the campgrounds and roadsides. I plan to keep on the
lookout for it. Fortunately my search was not entirely in vain, a
walk around Eco Pond turned up a Clay-colored Sparrow (yes Rex)
in the Buttonwoods just east of the small boardwalk on the east
side of the pond as well as my first Blue Grosbeak at Flamingo this
fall. Also this morning there were two Peregrine Falcons and
several Short-tailed Hawks soaring over Eco Pond; 1 light phase, 3
dark phase, and 1 dark phase immature (and another in the
afternoon over the marina).
