Amos Tversky did some research on the relations between individual concepts
(individual nodes) and generic categories (groups) and found that the
perceived distance between them (perceived link strength) was assymetrical.
People perceive the group to be farther from the individual than the
individual to the group.  In other words, the group is bigger.

I sort of discuss this in an article in Social Networks (with Ron Rice)
about why we should use non-euclidean models for social network analysis.
