Hi Floridabirders,

Decided to stay in Leon County and do a little late day (1730 to 1900 hrs)
on-the-water birding on the south end of Lake Jackson. Put the kayak in at
Crowder Landing and made a lazy loop south to the entrance to Meginnis Arm
and followed the shallows and dense vegetation to the east into Ford's Arm.
Meginnis Arm is inaccessible due to exposed flats and dense vegetation.
Ford's is almost the same.

Birds seen were:
* Anhinga - 3
* Great Blue Heron - 4
* Great Egret - 5
* Little Blue Heron - 1 adult
* Tricolored Heron - 1 adult
* Cattle Egret - 3 flyover
* Green Heron - 2
* White Ibis - 2
* Osprey - 4
* Northern Bobwhite - 12 plus on the shore at Crowder Landing
* Common Moorhen - 16 plus, most were juvs.
* Killdeer - 1
* Forster's Tern - 6
* Mourning Dove - 8
* Chimney Swift - 4
* Eastern Kingbird - 25 all in one area aerial feeding together
* Loggerhead Shrike - 1
* Blue Jay - 2
* Fish Crow - 4
* Barn Swallow - 1
* Carolina Wren - 1 heard
* Northern Mockingbird - 9
* European Starling - 100 plus - 2 flocks on manicured lawns adjacent
  to the lake
* Northern Cardinal - 1 heard
* Red-winged Blackbird - 75 plus, most females / juvs.
* Boat-tailed Grackle - 2
  Plus one 5-foot gator

The disheartening aspect was that hydrilla again has taken over most of this
part of the lake. Especially from Ford's Arm back toward Meginnis, there are
very broad areas of this invasive exotic. Also saw quite a bit of water
hyacinth, not a good sign for the health of the lake.

Good birding,

Harry Hooper
