Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo has three offerings that meet your query:

1) We have a basic skills lab (course name Learning Skills 101) for 1.0 and .05 credit units that has computer assisted instruction as well as videos on study skills, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, keyboarding, and Internet. Students can work on whatever skill(s) they want or need. A certain amount of hours is necessary for the credit (cr/no credit).

2) We also offer a 1.5 credit unit Learning Essentials for College Survival course in a 9-week short course format. It includes just the study skills for college success (without the power processes and life skills of the Master Student classes).

3) We are also just beginning to offer adjunct study skills courses (modeled after De Anza College) for Government and Psychology. The students earn .05 credit unit for a combination of weekly group tutoring (specific to course and instructor), instructional videos and software in the above Academic Support Lab (includes LASSI), and study strategies workshops specific to content area.

Hope this helps. If you want more information about any one of the above, call or email me off-list.

Subject: Study Skills Lab

I am hoping for a response from any California Junior Colleges regarding a study skills lab that is worth one unit or more. We currently run labs that are zero credit, yet need to do away with that. Either a general study skills class that teaches text book marking, note taking, test taking skills, time management, etc, or a study skills lab that is specific to a certain class such as Biology, Statistics, etc.

Any help is much appreciated.
Thank you, Lisa B./Lassen Community College
