A Chuck-will's-widow is usually silent in winter. I have never heard any call from them after summer, however, Whip-poor-wills will make a "whit whit" call in winter, and will respond to calls as well.

I have heard "out of season" Chucks give their recognizable guttural croaks while feeding.  It is not something, however, that I can imitate, and call them up.  Usually they are on the move.  JD
