I too have heard this low gutteral call from Chuck's in winter here in Port Charlotte, I have never heard their distinctive song outside of the breeding season though.

  I have heard "out of season" Chucks give their recognizable guttural croaks while feeding.  It is not something, however, that I can imitate, and call them up.  Usually they are on the move.  JD
