An interesting formula for paying tutors was shared at the recent National
Tutoring Association Conference in Atlanta.

Untrained tutors and those in training are awarded a stipend that is paid
at the completion of training. i.e. $150-$200 based on a lower per hour
cost. Only those who complete all aspects of training are awarded the

After training, tutors receive an increase based on their new expertise
i.e. $8.00/hour.

One trainer decided that that would work well for those tutors who completed
her instruction with our 5-week online tutor training course, The Online
eMaster Tutor Training Course. With instruction planned for 3-4 hours/week
over 5 weeks, she calculated that each tutor would receive $120-$150 for
completing all course components.

Another trainer suggested obtaining 1-credit hour as a further incentive for
completion of the course. He planned to contact Education and a few other
departments with the idea.

Generally the sentiment favored a tiered payroll system where trained and
more experienced tutors received higher per hour rates.
