This past weekend I did my 300th birding trip to St. Marks NWR (Wakulla
Co.) since Jan.1 2000. I now have enough data to present summary
statistics. The 300 trips cover 223 calendar dates, so some dates are
covered twice or, in some cases, three times. Take the August data
cautiously since I usually take a trip to the southwest during that month
and only have twelve calendar dates covered. The data are: month, number
of dates birded, daily avg. # spp., total spp. seen in each month, best
day percentage-wise (number seen of total spp. available for the month).
To date I have found 270 spp. on the refuge between the visitor?s center
and the lighthouse.

Jan., 20 dates, 80 spp. daily avg., 153 total spp., 77.8% of total
seen in one day.
Feb., 17 dates, 72 spp. daily avg., 136 total spp., 70.6% of total
seen in one day.
Mar., 20 dates, 82 spp. daily avg., 161 total spp., 71.4% of total
seen in one day.
Apr., 20 dates, 91 spp. daily avg., 185 total spp., 64.9% of total
seen in one day.
May, 18 dates, 75 spp. daily avg., 152 total spp., 71.7% of total seen
in one day.
Jun., 19 dates, 67 spp. daily avg., 126 total spp., 77.8% of total
seen in one day.
Jul., 22 dates, 59 spp. daily avg., 132 total spp., 68.9% of total
seen in one day.
Aug., 12 dates, 51 spp. daily avg., 114 total spp., 70.2% of total
seen in one day.
Sep., 16 dates, 66 spp. daily avg., 158 total spp., 57.6% of total
seen in one day.
Oct., 18 dates, 59 spp. daily avg., 173 total spp., 57.2% of total
seen in one day.
Nov., 15 dates, 66 spp. daily avg., 145 total spp., 73.1% of total
seen in one day.
Dec., 26 dates, 80 spp. daily avg., 170 total spp., 68.2% of total
seen in one day.

The average month has slightly over 150 spp. available. This is
obviously an underestimate, but suggests that the refuge is a good place
to bird at just about any time.

Have fun,

Tom Curtis
