My adage on this is that you can't decorate your head with wisdom
furniture until you have some mental  furniture there to rearrange.
It's also important to understand what info you *must* memorize for
instant use, such as formulas, vocabulary, comma use rules, and the fact
that you should never dump a copper penny into sulphuric acid, so that
you can solve problems with the formulas, talk sensibly with the
vocabulary or jargon, write usefully with correct commas, and understand
why the penny and acid don't mix well ;-)
