COMPASS offers concordances to compare its reading placement scores with
Nelson-Denny and others.
We have used COMPASS for reading placement only (not achievement or exit)
for about 7 years. It is a computerized adaptive test and offers diagnostic
tests (vocabulary, comprehension, and reading habits) as well as placement.
As far as I know, no one has convincingly challenged the validity of the
test. However, we see signs that students underperform for reasons having
to do with unfamiliarity with computers, failure to heed directions, etc.

Subject: assessment tools

For many years, we at TCC have been using the CPT for placement into the
developmental reading program and the Nelson Denny pre and post tests as an
achievement test with reading students (not used as an exit test, however.)
Some faculty and staff here are questioning the validity of these two
tests. Is there a more reputable tool out there? I see from the archives
of this list that many of you are using COMPASS. Has anyone done a
comparison study on this lately? Thanks for your help.
