We have struggled with these same issues for years.
Currently we are using ACCUPLACER for college placement and the Nelson Denny for internal pre and post. 10.6 is our exit level out of the lowest level reading course, as well. The ACCUPLACER seems to do pretty well identifying the low level students. Of course, they struggle with the timed Nelson Denny in class. We are always open for suggestions, but have never seen anything else that is compelling.

To Rebekah Buck: Here at Trident Technical College in Charleston, SC we use the Compass for placement - <61 Developmental Reading and 61-85 Critical Reading (100 level) We then use the Nelson Denny as part of the exit criteria. 10.6 to exit Developmental Reading and 11.6 to exit Critical Reading. What scores do you see in your equivalent reading courses? What do you do with the pre and post Nelson-Denny? Individual study plans? exit based on growth? What is the stated exit criteria at TCC?

Anyone else out there that uses the Nelson-Denny - what scores to do you like to see to confidently move a student out of Developmental Reading?

For many years, we at TCC have been using the CPT for placement into the
developmental reading program and the Nelson Denny pre and post tests as an
achievement test with reading students (not used as an exit test, however.)
Some faculty and staff here are questioning the validity of these two
tests. Is there a more reputable tool out there? I see from the archives
of this list that many of you are using COMPASS. Has anyone done a
comparison study on this lately? Thanks for your help.
