***** To join INSNA, visit http://www.sfu.ca/~insna/ ***** The way I think of it, every group (community, society, team, etc) has a network -- several actually. A network is just a set of ties of a given type among a set of nodes. There will be all kinds of ties linking members of a group together. So the network is one aspect of every group. But there is more to a group than the network. There may be a unique culture (shared beliefs; memories of common events), or a sense of identity (e.g., who legitimately belongs to the group and who merely interacts with group members), etc. These may all result from interaction, but are not the same thing as interaction or relationship. steve.
