With the academic year coming to an end, I would like those of you who
chaired dissertation committees or sat on dissertation committees to
contact your recent graduates to give them a bit of homework for the
summer. For those of you who have recently completed the big term paper,
I'll directly give you a bit of homework for the summer.

Here is the assignment (if the disseration was completed between May 15,
2003 and May 14, 2004), submit a dissertation monograph for the IRA
dissertation of the year award competition. The basic guidelines are noted
in the next paragraphs.

The Outstanding Dissertation of the Year Award is a US$1,000 annual award
supported by a grant from Scott Foresman. The competition is open for
dissertations on reading or related fields completed between May 15, 2003
and May 14, 2004. Studies using any research approach (e.g., ethnographic,
experimental, historical, survey) are encouraged. Each study will be
assessed in light of the approach, the scholarly qualification of its
report, and its significant contributions to knowledge within the
reading/literacy field. For guidelines, write to Research and Policy
Division. E-mail: [log in to unmask] Completed entries must be
received by October 1, 2004.

Information about this award (and others from IRA) is carried each year in
an issue of Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Lectura y Vida, Reading
Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Today, and on the website
www.reading.org. You can download a copy of the applications in PDF format
from the website.

Hey scouts---look at it this way, the development of a monograph for the
competition will take you down the road towards the crafting of a
manuscript for publication.

The members of the IRA Outstanding Dissertation Committee are looking
forward to receiving quality monographs from around the world once again
this year.
