Subject: Re: general ledger retention

Thank you Larry for the question and thank you Mark for your e-mail. I
would point out that retention schedules state minimum requirements, but
there is nothing stopping an institution from keeping them longer with the
exception of additional cost and space. In the case of the ledger in the
multi institutional disposition authorities, it states 6 years, however
there is nothing stopping a department from keeping them 7, 8 or 9 years or
even longer. The 6 years meet the legislative requirements. A good example
would be in the event there was a legal or court challenge, then those
records may have to be kept longer. In any event I did like your response
Mark. Thanks for the assist.
