Hi, Ira:

Is your issue one of software compatibility or one of permission? A
quick scan of the CDs I have in our shop shows that many of them are
compatible with different versions of Windows for PC as well as the Mac
OS. Could it be that your machines are configured to preclude anyone
but an administrator to utilize potentially downloadable material?

We rely quite heavily on our desktops and laptops here. I've had the
guys from Academic Technology set up our machines in a relatively
restricted fashion that precludes students from downloading too much or
adding software without permission.

If you are an administrator for your machines, try signing on as the
administrator (often just signing on as yourself) and then try to use
the CD in question. You might want to check with your support staff
regarding permissions and access as well.

Subject: CD-Rom useage in a computer lab

More and more publishers of text books are including CD-Roms as an =
supplement to their curriculum. I manage a computer lab in which more =
students are wanting to run these CD-Roms, but our computers, running =
Microsoft XP, have been setup not to allow programs from CD-Roms to run.

How do your institutions handle the use of CD-Roms from text books? Are
=
there specific set of computers setup to handle this? If so, are they =
also set up to print, since teachers need proof that students have done
=
that work and/or exercises? =20

We are having difficulty getting a clear solution. Thanks for your help
=
in advance.
