To my mind, Herb Gans' classic _The Urban Villagers_ (1962) is the classic
about isolated densely-knit community not being able to form external
linkages.
Mark Granovetter makes this point in his famous "The Strength of Weak
Ties" (which is about a lot more than Gladwell highlighted), and in the
mid-1970s, he and Gans had a smart debate in the pre-blog American Journal
of Sociology.
