If you want to do something very cool (i.e. linked by every site and blog),you should go for Google Maps
Showing some points on a map is very very easy,as you can see in the "Hello world" example in the documentation athttp://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/#The_Hello_World_of_Google_Maps
Then possibly other people will add new features and something shinywill come out of it ;-)
