I think a huge part of the problem is that we are expected to "fix" 12
or more years of poor (or no) reading habits in one semester. Students
coming in with reading levels below the 12th grade cannot possibly make
the gains they need to make in one semester--especially when we are
accepting students with 8th, 9th, 10th grade level scores.

Even students who score within the grade level range of college reading
don't know how to dig deeper--as Skip Downing says--beyond a superficial
and literal level of reading. Higher level comprehension comes first
with metacognitive awareness of the reading process/skills and develops
slowly with extensive practice. We don't expect students to learn
everything they need to learn to write well in one semester, so why
should we expect that they can read competently with 15 weeks of
instruction? We can teach disparate reading and comprehension skills to
students, just like we can teach the book part of driver's ed. in the
classroom setting. But until the student gets out there on the road and
practices application of the skills............

What do you use as an exit test?

Is anybody else having problems with students failing the reading exit

test more than 3 times? At my school the students have to pass the
class
and the exit exam to move on. What resources does you school's learning

center offer to help these students? These students are passing the
class
but not the test and I do not understand why that is.
