I've used Accuplacer and Compass. We used Accuplacer first but changed to
Compass a few years before it went online because Oklahoma uses ACT as the
college-entry test and ACT-CAAPS for our exit or mid-level assessment test.
It seemed best to use the same measures across the board.

Both instruments are helpful in student placement from my perspective. My
biggest complaint is that the online version of Compass is still prone to
crashing. When Accuplacer went online they had a few months of instability
but things worked out rather quickly and there were no more problems unless
they were on our end.

On the other hand, Compass still has periods of instability, even after 1-2
years. I've kept Accuplacer running in the background so that we can serve
the students when they come to enroll - students can enroll anytime as
opposed to specific enrollment periods - so things have to be running all
the time. To be fair to Compass, the program is more complex than Accuplacer
was in this point in its development. The more bells and whistles a program
has, the more opportunity for things to go wrong.

Other than that which is my chief complaint, I see no difference whatsoever
in the two programs as to what they measure. We've had good experiences with
both as far as student placement goes. The math, English and reading faculty
monitor placement and say that the vast majority of students are placed
where they need to be now with Compass as they were in the past with
Accuplacer. The exceptions are few - as it should be.

Hi All, I would love to hear if anyone has used COMPASS and Accuplacer
to get a comparison. We've had a number of issues with COMPASS and I'd
like to hear about people's experiences with Accuplacer.

Thanks and Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there,

We use Accuplacer, which is similar to COMPASS, as both placement and
post-test. When we use it as a post-test, students only take the section
of the test relevant to the developmental course they finished.

We are using the COMPASS placement test to place students in one of two
Developmental Reading Courses. We would like to administer an exit level
test at the end of each course. Any suggestions?
