We have purchased the Plato system for use on our campus but were unable to continue subscibing for support and updates. We were also disappointed in the lack of updates to developmental college level materials. While we still use this with students when there is a need, we have been using the AB Longman product MyCompLab and are now using Mywritinglab. These are both internet based grammar and writing improvement programs. We have found Mywritinglab to be more interactive and useful in that it provides more instruction before givng the exercises for the student to work. The major benefit of both of these programs has to do with cost. The programs can be bundled with any AB Longman text. We bundle it with a customized edition of the The Little Brown Hanbook and we are investigating the potential to bundle it with a text for our First Year Experience course. When the students purchase their texts they get a subsciption code that gives them access from any internet connected computer any time of the day. There is no cost to the campus.

Hello, listers

We've been using PLATO as part of the lab component for two of our
developmental reading courses. Our students generally seem to like it
and it seems to be helpful, although we have no hard data to back that
impression. Right now we're looking at some possible changes to our
program and we're not sure we'll be able to continue using PLATO.

I'd like to talk to others who use PLATO (local server installation
rather than PLATO web) and share experience. The recent announcement of
a dramatic increase in support costs has us unsure of how to proceed.

Please reply off-list at this address or my school email as listed
below. For some reason, our college server blocks LRNASST and I can
only subscribe through Yahoo.
