Good afternoon! I have an unexpected job opening at the United States
Military Academy Preparatory School for an Instructor of Reading and
Study Strategies / Academic Counselor. 

 

 

The United States Military Academy Preparatory School is the one-year
developmental education program for approximately 250 students (cadet
candidates) provisionally accepted to the United States Military Academy
(West Point). Students attend this 10-month academic program in math,
English, and reading/study strategies to better prepare for the academic
demands of West Point. Students are 18-22 years old and are 40%
student-athlete, 40% minority, 25% former Army soldier, and 15% female.

 

Duties:

Teach study strategies, reading efficiency, life skills, and critical
thinking. Assist in the development of a comprehensive curriculum. Serve
as academic counselor to approximately 75 students. Conduct workshops
for students and staff. Encouraged to sponsor extracurricular clubs and
activities. Opportunities to work with athletic teams on performance
enhancement (motivation, focus, stress management, etc.)

 

Requirements:

Masters degree or above in reading education, developmental education,
counselor education, student affairs administration, or similar. Must
have experience teaching study strategies/reading courses and
advising/counseling students. Experience working with at-risk students,
student-athletes, and/or minority students a plus. Must show proof of
American citizenship. A security investigation will be conducted.
