We have a partnership with the SAAS (student athlete academic services)
office since we both report to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
They were moved over from athletics last summer.

We are not involved in study tables but we provide tutors for various
study groups and activities. We train their tutors if they hire those
from outside our area for study table or other groups. Sometimes they
hire our tutors to work for them as well. At the request of our
football coach, all tutoring for which they receive "credit" in
athletics is held in their offices and facilities, not our tutoring
centers. Initially, I didn't like that, but they can monitor NCAA
compliance a lot better there than we would, so I now support it.
Athletes only use our services for less "run of the mill" courses as
needed, and they are sanctioned by SAAS before they come over here to
apply. And most of that tutoring is also scheduled in their offices.

We track their data the same way we do our own, treating their status
as athletics the same way we track data for each of our three tutoring
centers, our study groups and our SI programs. Athletes are coded in
our database that we use for looking at our varioius cost centers and we
share semesterly reports with them as well as with our boss.

It has been a "bumpy" partnership. Their culture is quite different
from ours in the profession, but we feel like we have contributed to
making them a bit better at what they do by partnering with us on the
fundamentals of learning assistance.

Good luck, and prepare to stay flexible.

Hello,

In what ways, if any, does your learning center collaborate with the
coaches and teams? Do you offer specific tutoring times, workshops,
study tables? Do the athletes come to your learning center, or is
there

another area earmarked for teams' study skills and/or tutoring
assistance? What is your method of record keeping? Do you report
about
athletes' attendance to the coaches? If so, using what method?

Please reply either to the listserv or to me alone. Thank you very
much.
