At UNCW the university athletes are required to put in a certain number
of hours at study tables based on their GPA, etc (all incoming freshmen
start out with a required 10 hours). We do not staff these study tables
with tutors; the athletic department has a monitor and the athletes sign
in and out. These students can get study table hours credit for
attending tutoring, SI sessions, or study skills workshops/individual
appointments. We ask on the standard request form whether a student is a
university athlete, and we report weekly to the academic compliance
officer in the athletic department how many hours of services each
student athlete has participated in. That is usually in the form of a
simple e-mail.

Subject: Collaboration with the Athletic Department

Hello,

In what ways, if any, does your learning center collaborate with the
coaches and teams? Do you offer specific tutoring times, workshops,
study tables? Do the athletes come to your learning center, or is there

another area earmarked for teams' study skills and/or tutoring
assistance? What is your method of record keeping? Do you report about
athletes' attendance to the coaches? If so, using what method?

Please reply either to the listserv or to me alone. Thank you very
much.
