Hello, Evanthi: We make great effort to serve student-athletes, with the emphasis on "student." We do not segregate services or use options for this specific audience, so we offer no team-specific service. This said, we work very closely with our athletics department to channel student-athletes needing academic support to our center. One way that has been very successful is a deal we have regarding what we call "Power Hours." Student-athletes (by NCAA requirements, as I understand it) are required to attend a certain number of team/monitored study halls. If they use our center for tutoring or for individual development, they receive double credit. So a student meeting with one of our tutors for one-half hour will actually earn one full hour toward that week's requirement. Now, we do quite a bit of tracking and reporting, both generally and team-specific. I meet weekly with the assistant athletic director whose charge is academic compliance to discuss student-athletes' weekly use of services and brainstorm on specific cases. I also send a weekly report of usage to this director, who forwards pertinent information to the appropriate coach. So student athletes who might be referred through our Early Warning Program can expect a follow-up chat with not just their academic advisor, but also their coach and the athletic director. Another helpful contact has been my involvement in our Athletic Council, a group of faculty and admin staff who are charged with identifying issues and recommending policy to deal with them. This committee has offered me a bird's-eye view of the athletic program and its interaction with the academic side of the house. Good luck, A. -----Original Message----- From: Open Forum for Learning Assistance Professionals [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Evanthia Rosati Sent: Tuesday, October 10, 2006 6:23 PM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Collaboration with the Athletic Department Hello, In what ways, if any, does your learning center collaborate with the coaches and teams? Do you offer specific tutoring times, workshops, study tables? Do the athletes come to your learning center, or is there another area earmarked for teams' study skills and/or tutoring assistance? What is your method of record keeping? Do you report about athletes' attendance to the coaches? If so, using what method? Please reply either to the listserv or to me alone. Thank you very much. -- Evanthia O. Rosati Reading and Study Skills Specialist The Learning Center [log in to unmask] (847)635-1795 "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
