The University of Maryland's Learning Assistance Service is seeking a math counselor for the 2007-08 school year. Anticipated Position Vacancy Position: Full-time Math Counselor, Learning Assistance Service, a division of the University Counseling Center (Exempt Staff #100345) Duties: Coordinates the Math Learning Program by providing resources to undergraduate and graduate students, individually and/or in groups, to help build self-confidence in math. Diagnoses math deficiencies and develops intervention strategies to help students be successful in their required mathematics courses. Trains and supervises the math learning graduate assistants. Collaborates with the Math Department and consults with on-campus colleges and departments, faculty and staff on mathematical learning skills. Serves as Lecturer in the Math Department and teaches general math courses, as well as math learning courses. Conducts Research on the impact of interventions and presents these results in journals or at national conferences. Qualifications: Doctorate required. Preferred academic concentration in Education, Math Education, Mathematics or a closely related field. Mathematics concentration at undergraduate and/or master's level will also be considered. College level teaching experience in undergraduate mathematics courses (developmental through lower level courses) preferred. Strong interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge of general learning theories, learning styles, and math anxiety reduction techniques. Knowledge of general study skills. Managerial skills/experience preferred. Basic computer skills required.
