Evariste Galois flunked out of college and spent much of his adult life in prison before he was killed in a duel at the age of 20.
Yet, based on a meager 60 pages of published work, Galois is considered one of the world's greatest mathematicians. His insights form the foundation for modern public key cryptography.
Bits can be used for other things than storing numbers or their memory addresses; they don't have to be used for web pages, word-processor documents or spreadsheets.
Jim Wilson will discuss the bizarre "new math" of Evariste Galois. Specifically, he will examine the thorny problem of cryptographic key exchange.
You're not in Kansas anymore!
