Developmental course grades here are not counted towards the GPA nor do they
count towards graduation. We use SA, SB, SC, and U for the grading scale
(essentially satisfactory/unsatisfactory with added information), and
students receiving U's are required to repeat the courses as they are, of
course, prerequisites to the higher level courses. I believe they have 3
opportunities to try to pass the course, and then lose financial aid, etc.
and typically leave the college (for at least 1 year). It's not that we're
kicking them out, but I believe it's related to SAP (Standards of Academic
Progress) and financial aid.

We also use COMPASS placement testing, and have many basic review courses
and opportunities for students to brush up on the material and try to test
out. We're pretty strict with how often students are allowed to COMPASS
test though; I believe they can only take it, at most, once per semester.

Subject: Grades in Developmental Coursework

Hello,

A proposal has come up here to remove developmental course grades from the
GPA. The credits do not count toward graduation. However, many students
end up on academic probation because of their developmental course work
and the impact on GPA.

I need some research citations to defend having the course grades count.
I have a lot of professional stuff on my shelves but am hoping you can
guide me to the resource locations quickly.

Any help you can give is much appreciated.
