Position Announcement

The Department of Learning Support Programs is seeking to fill a full-time, 
9-month academic year position. The Learning Support Specialist will report 
to the Director of Learning Support Programs and will provide designated 
freshmen and some sophomores with the tools, resources, and methods they 
need to be successful. In particular, she/he will give assistance to 
students who need to improve their reading and study skills working 
individually and in small groups, as appropriate, with academically at-risk 

The Learning Support Specialist will assess reading levels and learning 
styles, and provide or coordinate necessary supports, complementing the 
work of other learning support programs within the University. She/he will 
teach effective success strategies and will ultimately be charged with 
helping students develop their meta-cognitive skills; set and achieve 
goals; gain self-awareness; access resources; and improve reading levels 
and study habits. Since this is a new position, it requires a great deal of 
initiative and creative thinking, as well as strong skills in a variety of 

It is expected that the appropriate individual will collaborate with a 
variety of faculty and staff from around the University and will serve as 
an active member of the Learning Support Team, working especially closely 
with the Coordinator of the Academic Enrichment Program, the Director of 
Academic Support Services for Student Athletes, the Director of Writing and 
Tutoring Support Services, the Coordinator of Freshman Advising, and the 
Director of the Academic Discovery Program.

Position Qualifications: Masterís degree with expertise in 
reading/writing/literacy or a related discipline as well as 3 to 5 years 
experience in learning support services at the college level. Experience 
teaching/tutoring/advising diverse groups of students, especially freshmen, 
is preferred. Familiarity with current technologies and research that 
relate to learning support services, plus excellent interpersonal and 
organizational skills are essential.
