Merrill Deming
"Meaningful Outcomes in Student Services: Valuing Outside-of-Class
Learning"
Merrill Deming has twenty-eight years of increasingly responsible
experience in the California community colleges with eight of those
years in direct administration and supervision of college wide
instructional programs.  Currently employed as Professor of Mathematics
at Crafton Hills College, Yucaipa, California, she has also served as
Learning Disability Specialist, Coordinator of the Learning Resource
Center, and Acting Dean of Continuing Education/Evening College.
She has a strong commitment to the various missions of the community
college and to the principles of student success and has made numerous
presentations and keynotes to state and national organizations.
 
A SAMPLE OF CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS
"Remotely Training Tutors in Quantitative Disciplines"
Dr. Sarah Frey and Ms. Sumie Shima, University of Connecticut
In an effort to provide consistent, subject specific, high quality tutor
training, UConn's Quantitative Learning Center has developed a course
for math and science tutors.  This course is unique in that it is
offered in person, via video conferencing to our regional campuses, and
soon to be recorded and available online.
 
"Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries: The Issues and Strategies"
Ms. Rachel Luna and Ms. Linda Lei, University of California, Berkeley
All students, regardless of their major, must cross disciplinary
boundaries at some time in their schooling.  Yet many find it absolutely
horrific to do so.  What are the issues and fears surrounding this
topic?  What are different strategies and techniques they can use to do
well in an unfamiliar discipline?  Find out from a student's point of
view in this discussion-based, yet interactive seminar.
 
"Tell me, I forget; Show me, I remember; Involve me, I understand"
Ms. Janelle Eichler, Yuba College, Marysville, California
This will be an informational workshop that explores Supplemental
Instruction (SI) and how to implement it on campus.
 
Tutor Roundtable
ACTLA Board Members
Provides an open forum for discussing varioius topics of concern to
tutors.  Examples include specific scenarios that present challenges for
tutors with discussion of tips and techniques that work for tutors.
 
"Fun with Future Academic Development 'Get into the FAD'"
Yuba College Tutors
This is a presentation focusing on challenges, positive outcomes, and
the wave of the future for online tutoring; Do's and don'ts of
successful English workshops; and Building a community through clubs.
