Linda, I am a non-faculty director who was hired from outside of the college. The pros: I came in with new ideas and no opinions about what had happened in the past. I also had new energy and excitement about what the program could become. The cons: it has taken time for faculty to 'warm-up' to me and fully support our programs. I also am the 4th director in as many years and the previous 2 directors had been faculty first and then returned to faculty after a year in this position; so that may have contributed to some of the weariness. However, 18 months later, I am gaining ground and our program is thriving. I do make it a point to attend any campuses meetings, forums, etc. where faculty might be present and I mingle, a lot! I also try to meet new faculty at the beginning of each semester and keep at least regular email contact with instructors who have tutors working directly with their classes. At the beginning of each semester, I contact department chairs about possibly attending one of the staff meetings to talk about our programs and how we can offer assistance to students. I don't always get a good response, but I keep trying! Annette Annette M.
