We used Smarthinking for two years and have discontinued their service.
We considered using AskOnline, but opted to create our own Virtual
Academic Support Center (VASC) instead. We have built the (VASC) in
Desire -to-Learn. (It could have just as easily been built in
Blackboard, but TN uses D2L.) The VASC offers several advantages:

* We are saving $20,000 a year compared to what we spent on
Smarthinking.
* The money we spend on tutors remains at our university in the form of
funding to help our students pay for their education.
* The tutors have attended our classes and know what our professors
expect.
* The software we are using has already been purchased by the university
and can be used at no additional cost.
* We have control over tutor training and the responses they provide.

Subject: Online tutoring programs

Hello:

I have been asked to prepare a comparison between online tutoring
programs in regards to differences and similarities and costs. I am
looking at Smarthinking, Tutor.com, Plato, eTutoring, and AskOnline. If
you use these programs or have considered using them, would you please
send me your thoughts? If anyone has already done a comparison on these
programs, I would appreciate seeing it.

Thank you for your help.
