Regarding the question that Nicole has asked regarding "best practices in
supervising large student staffs and maintaining communication among the
professional staff members," I suggest that this concern be shared with a
faculty member at her institution who can help. Such a person is probably
teaching in the management program or is in the counseling department. Every
college/university has experts that can help a colleague with a problem such
as this.

On another level, if the center has not been holding weekly staff meetings,
this ought to be considered. You can view a weekly staff meeting agenda that
was used at CSU Long Beach when I was the director of its learning
assistance center.

The agenda form is in LSCHE as part of Resources/LSC Management/Management
Forms under the heading, "Agenda Checklist for Staff meetings." The URL is

I hope that this is helpful. Collegially.........

Subject: Supervising Student Staff

> Hello listers!
>
> Our Learning Center has three professional staff (director, asst.
> director/writing specialist, and secretary), one graduate assistant, and a
> student staff of over 100 employees.
>
> While we have many positives, we have realized that all three of our
> professional staff members have very different leadership and supervising
> strengths and strategies -- which sometimes leads to dysfunction and a
> break down of communication. For a staff of three supervising over 100
> student employees, we need to find a way to make it work.
>
> Our director has asked me to poll you for your best practices in
> supervising large student staffs and maintaining communication among the
> professional staff members.

> Sincerely yours,
