Nicole,

One of the things I have taken advantage of here at Bryant is utilizing my students as supervisors. I am new to the position and admittedly fell into a great situation, but so far this has helped greatly. I directly supervise 37 student tutors. I have 5 Master Peer Tutors (MPT's) who assist me in numerous ways. First of all, there is always one MPT on duty during our evening hours. I utilize the MPT's in training and observation/evaluation of the tutoring staff, and they are able to take on other projects as needed. This is a great help in managing the supervision of a large number of students. Tutors who wish to be MPT's must be CRLA certified, and shown leadership within our program.

As far as managing the communication between professional staff members, we meet weekly and try to keep an open door policy for others.

I hope this helps.

Subject: Supervising Student Staff

Hello listers!

Our Learning Center has three professional staff (director, asst.
director/writing specialist, and secretary), one graduate assistant, and a
student staff of over 100 employees.

While we have many positives, we have realized that all three of our
professional staff members have very different leadership and supervising
strengths and strategies -- which sometimes leads to dysfunction and a
break down of communication. For a staff of three supervising over 100
student employees, we need to find a way to make it work.

Our director has asked me to poll you for your best practices in supervising
large student staffs and maintaining communication among the professional
staff members.

Sincerely yours,

Nichole
