Sara:

We were just discussing the possibility of using old final exams as a diagnostic
tool during the interview process for 1-1 tutoring to determine competency in
the subject area. And, I think I might consider making it open book as math,
like any language, gets rusty without frequent use.

I agree with you about not asking tutors to take the final exams in classes they
tutor along with their SI groups or tutees! There would be no point to that.

Quoting Sara Weertz <[log in to unmask]>:

| At the moment, all of our tutors happen to be SI Leaders, so class attendance
| is mandatory across the board. An important aspect of our SI Leader/Tutor job
| is helping students prepare for an exam--facilitating study skills specific
| to the course (plus, mock exams are required with every support course) and
| incorporating test-taking strategies. All sessions held immediately after an
| exam are considered "Test Debriefing Days" where Tutors/SI Leaders not only
| get the students talking about specific test questions but also examining
| their test prep efforts.
|
| I allow SI Leaders to work with their instructors to determine whether they
| take the exams. Several instructors demand it (chemistry, anatomy,
| physiology...), some instructors provide the SI Leaders with an advance copy
| of the exam (so taking it is a moot issue) and still other instructors simply
| ask that the SI Leader review the exam while the students are taking it.
|
| Some SI faculty who require exams will go one step farther and grade the SI
| Leader's exam. (Believe me, this isn't because the instructors feel unsure of
| the SI Leader's work.) Even though the SI Leader has already taken the course
| and demonstrated competency, the stress that taking an SI exam heaves is one
| I would much rather have them avoid. They have enough demands on their plate
| as is. Therefore, if asked (and I sometimes am) I do not recommend the SI
| Leaders/Tutors take any exams, let only a final.
|
| Along the same line, I would never consider having tutors take a final exam.
| Unless you're uncertain of the tutor's competency (which, if this is the
| case, begs a whole other supervisory question) prep for a final not only
| takes away from the tutors' personal final exam study schedule, but
| also--when you think about it--is really a waste of time and effort,
| considering the fact that there will never be a debriefing afterward with
| students.

| We also require a faculty reference for all of our tutors stating that they
| are able to tutor the specific class; other minimum requirements are an
| A/B+
| in the courses tutored, overall GPA of 3.0, etc. But the issue I
| occasionally run into is an upper-level math (or science) student who
| tested
| into higher-level courses (meaning they don't take the lower level courses
| here) and has been recommended to tutor more basic courses in those areas
| and runs into difficulty with remembering and/or explaining some basic
| concepts. It doesn't happen too often thankfully, and tutors are required
| to contact their tutees' instructors to touch base with them and obtain a
| syllabus so they know what's coming up. I do make a big point at hiring and
| during training that tutors are expected to be prepared for their tutoring
| sessions, and that they might need to spend some time on their own
| reviewing
| certain topics if needed, but it still happens occasionally.
|
| I've thought about requiring math tutors to take the final exams of the
| courses they wish to tutor. Does anyone see any issues with doing that?

| We don't use any type of competency assessment; however, prospective tutors

| I haven't assessed prospective tutors in the past but I'm thinking of
| perhaps beginning to - at least for math tutors. We've had a couple of
| issues lately as well.
|
| I'll be interested in hearing if other centers do this. Given the constant
| turnover in tutors in community colleges, always being able to recruit good
| ones is an ongoing task.
