I like what you say about Magdalen.
I suspect the French authors had madeleine in mind.
Poe's Madeline is interesting too because of the uncanniness and falling in "The Fall of the House of Usher," which is about collapsed boundaries of many kinds--past/present,Madeline/Roderick, narrator/Roderick, narrator/reader, contagious fear.
