Hi Katrina,

As far as I know, none of these munia/mannikins (genus Lonchura) have made it on to the ABA list or the FOS list, so they are not countable--officially. But that depends on the kind of list your friends are keeping...

BTW, I couldn't find either of your English names (Tricolor Munia or Chestnut Mannikin) in Clements. Because they're popular in the pet trade, there are often multiple English names for these little estrildidae. Also, according to my marked corrections in Clements, some have been moved out of Lonchura into other genera.

I just got a call from a friend who returned this afternoon from
spending a couple of days in the Dry Tortugas. He and his wife
saw, and took pictures of two birds they couldn't identify. The
description he gave me fits Trocolor Munia (aka Chestnut
Mannikin) to a T. I know these birds have been introduced to
Cuba, Jamaica and various other islands. I told him they weren't
countable as far as I knew since they were introduced. That is
correct, isn't it?
