The highlights of a weekend trip to Everglades National Park were eleven
Greater Flamingoes (seven sub-adults and four molting into adult plumage) in
the northeastern corner of Snake Bight on Monday (9/28) and a Vesper Sparrow
in the parking area of Mahogany Hammock on Saturday (9/26). FOTS species
seen this weekend were Prothonotary Warblers at Lucky Hammock Annex on
Saturday, Sharp-shinned Hawk at Flamingo, Tennessee Warbler on Bear Lake
Road and Palm Warblers at Flamingo on Sunday (9/27), and Orchard Oriole at
Flamingo, Lesser Black-backed Gull in Florida Bay, and American Kestrel in
the Homestead Farm fields on Monday (9/28). Other interesting sightings
included a couple of Swainson's Warblers on Bear Lake Trail and twenty Red
Knots off the Flamingo Visitor Center on Sunday and fifty Red Knots and a
Pectoral Sandpiper at Snake Bight on Monday. Painted Buntings have arrived
and can be found on mowed edges of weedy areas around Flamingo.
