***** To join INSNA, visit http://www.insna.org ***** I want to add that the idea of using social network analysis and value net analysis (not sure what is meant by influence analysis) in a business context is still important. We are moving through a transformative time in business where the use of models and metrics will have profound effect. In the same breath there is a responsibility on what we can say using them. It is a professional responsibility not to overstate what conclusions can be drawn from these techniques. Shows that Gartner is just trying to jump on the bandwagon. Trying to associate SNA with the type of pattern analysis that is done in software is confusing if not very damaging to companies that will think that this is as easy as getting UCINET and a couple of low level analysts to make unfounded predictions. There may be patterns that come out of SNA research that have predictive power, however this is something that still needs years of backend research and generative theory. Today SNA can gather and analyze data, derive some metrics, and tie them only to the most basic of generative reasons including theories like reciprocity and balance theory. SNA may even have something to say about social embeddedness. This is a far cry from trying to say that there are replicable patterns for determining when and how these things occur.
