FLAS Fellowships for Latin American Languages

Through support from the U.S. Department of Education, the UF Center for Latin American Studies offers Summer and Academic Year Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents currently enrolled as graduate student at UF. The program of graduate study must include a less-commonly-taught Latin American language, as well as Latin American area studies.

AY FLAS Fellowships support training in Brazilian Portuguese and Haitian Creole. The fellowship covers tuition and fees for 12 graduate credit hours per semester and provides a total stipend of $15,000 for the Fall and Spring semesters. Applicants must include Brazilian Portuguese or Haitian Creole and Latin American area studies courses within their proposed programs of study. A minimum of 3 credit hours of Portuguese or Haitian Creole must be taken each semester. The application deadline is February 1, 2010.

Summer FLAS Fellowships support participation in an intensive study program of a less-commonly-taught Latin American language (i.e., Brazilian Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Maya, Quechua, etc.) during the summer months. The fellowship covers the majority of program-related fees. When possible, the award also includes a travel stipend. The application deadline is March 1, 2010.
